9 things we learned during Oscars Week

Oscar parties in Hollywood: Can't stop, won't stop.

Oscars Week has been non-stop. Stars have stepped out at a dizzying number of parties, their stylists are hemming and hawing over Sunday's gowns and diamonds are flying around town like Amazon Prime deliveries. Here are nine things we learned from our experiences around Hollywood this week.

1. There’s so much more to learn about putting on foundation

We sat down with makeup maven Charlotte Tilbury, who talked to us about how she primes A-list faces for big red carpet days. (It all starts with a clay mask she slathers on stars like Alicia Vikander the second she walks in the door.) Check out her tips here:

2. Olivia Munn does not mess around

She talked to us about her intense swordplay training for X-Men: Apocalypsehere. We also appreciate that she revealed her real beauty secrets on Instagram this week.

3. There’s a lot of corsetry and scaffolding going on under those dresses

Just ask Mindy Kaling and Olivia Munn. Here's a recap of how they do it, people.

4. Keep a stack of Post-Its in your bathroom

Over at the Vanity Fair Make Up Artist Appreciation Spa Day at the SLS Hotel, Lancôme makeup touchups and Clarisonic mini-facials reigned. That's where Darais, the national celebrity makeup artist for Lancôme, gave us a fab tip: instead of getting your counters makeup-messy, try a cheap fix. "A lot of times, we're so used to using the back of our hands and mirrors in our bathroom to get our foundation on," he says. Instead, "just put a pad of Post-It notes on your counter-top, put your makeup on top of the Post-It note, and when you're done for the day just rip it off and throw it out." Genius.

5. Keep your eyes peeled for glittering cuffs

Like these? They're a casual $2 million.

Arm cuffs and yellow diamonds are going to be big this year, according to Kristen Lawler-Trustey from Forevermark diamonds. Although you'll see plenty of other sparkly accroutrements, too. "When it comes to the Oscars, it’s usually the more the better with diamonds," she told us. And if you see stars looking particularly decked out on Monday in Hollywood, it's probably because they haven't given back their diamond loaners yet.

6. The red carpet color matters

Because sometimes it's green, sometimes it's black, and sometimes – like at the Elton John party – it's white. "It's insanity," Ashley Green told us about all the detailed prep that goes into red carpets. Watch Greene weigh her weekend options in our exclusive VR experience here:

7. If you crash a party, be prepared to make an impromptu speech

Jennifer Lawrence has her say on equal pay.

When Jennifer Lawrence makes a surprise appearance at a party, you know she's going to have to say something. The Joy star was pulled onstage at the 9th Annual Women in Film Oscar cocktail party on Friday and was forced to say a few words. It may not have been a long speech, but it was effective.  "I didn’t know I was going to be (speaking). ... Equal pay for women!"

8. Getting ready in the car is always an option

Not bad for getting dressed in the car.

When Black-ish star Tracee Ellis Ross almost missed the Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards luncheon due to her shooting schedule, she did what any sensible woman would do: She made it work by getting dressed on the way there.  "I got dressed in the car," she said when she accepted the Fierce and Fearless award at the ceremony. "I'm unclear if what I’m wearing is see-through or not. If it is, sorry." Don't worry, it was solid-colored and fabulous.

9. Second time's the (more relaxing) charm

Just ask Eddie Redmayne. Last year he won the best actor prize for The Theory of Everything. This year, with a nomination for The Danish Girl (and OK, all eyes on Leo) things are a little ... more relaxing. "I’m trying to relax this year and really take it all in – whereas last year there was so much adrenaline that it was tricky to kind of take anything in," he told us at the Film is GREAT bash on Friday night.
