Alicia Vikander: Fashion star of the 2016 awards season
Alicia Vikander has had a pretty good year. She appeared in a whopping five films; won best supporting actress at the SAG awards; was nominated for two BAFTAs and two Golden Globes; is up for an Oscar for her role in The Danish Girl. And she seems to be happily dating Michael Fassbender.
The 27-year-old Swede also became the new face of Louis Vuitton and, with help from the house's top designer Nicolas Ghesquière and her stylist Victoria Sekrier, Vikander became the breakout fashion star of the 2016 awards season.
Like Jennifer Lawrence and Lupita Nyong'o before her, Vikander has capitalized on her moment in the spotlight, repeatedly impressing the fashion world with elegant choices that are bold but not fussy.
She started with a bang at the Golden Globes in a white column dress from Louis Vuitton with delicate ruffles detailing and pleats. It was at once simple and striking, especially as she turned to reveal the criss-cross back.
The subdued make-up and hair emphasized how perfectly the dress was tailored to her petite frame.
She followed the initial success with an ornate Mary Katrantzou gown -- a risk that paid off. The heavy beading could have gone awry, but the cut fit her perfectly and her lightly tussled hair and delicate earrings made the whole thing work.
She returned with an even more impeccable patchwork sequined gown from Louis Vuitton at the SAG Awards.
It was again perfectly fit to her lithe figure, and paired with a simple beauty look and accessories which let the dress shine. And it did -- though in a more sophisticated way than a full-length sequined dress would otherwise allow.
At the BAFTAs, she continued the trend of including some texture with a black leather dress and silver details.
So what will she chose for the biggest night of the season? The Louis Vuitton Spring 2016 collection was heavy on sportswear, so it will likely be a custom gown from Ghesquière. Hopefully a daring, yet polished piece that will have us talking for years to come.
