NEW YORK – Was that Twiggy on the runway?

No, but London’s Carnaby Steet and Swinging ’60s fashion came roaring back to life Thursday at Ralph Lauren’s fall collection on the last day of New York Fashion Week.

Models including Karlie Kloss did their best Twiggy impersonations (for you kids, she was the supermodel back in the day) in floppy hats, ruffled shirts, wide cuffs and belts, fringed ponchos, black leather mini dresses, jeans (of course) and vibrant blue velvet jackets that would look good on Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler.

Celebrity sightings included Sienna Miller and Tyson Beckford. Miller, star of American Sniper and the upcoming Live by Night with Ben Affleck, was center stage in the front row next to Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. (Considering what a magnet Lauren’s Polo Bar on Fifth Avenue is for famous faces, the low celebrity wattage was perhaps surprising.)

The show began with decidedly boyish Lauren fall classics in subdued taupe and mocha tones — double-breasted jackets, high-waisted pants, plaid blazers, knotted ties.

Then the designer switched gears to more feminine, romantic looks, first in black, and then in an explosion of colors including purple, red and gold, as well as long dresses in rich paisleys and floral prints. Suede and tweed made way for chiffon.

Also in the front row was Lauren Bush Lauren, niece of President George W. Bush, along with her husband David, Ralph Lauren’s son.

After her father-in-law took a bow, Lauren Bush gave the show a rave review. “Gorgeous, beautiful,” the former model told USA TODAY. “I loved it and there were so many different looks, from rock ‘n’ roll to cozy cashmere.”

She smiled. “But I’m biased.”
