A heartbreaking sonogram photo appears to show a dying twin holding on to his sibling’s hand in the womb.

Kansas couple, Brittani and Ian McIntire, recently found out they were having fraternal twins, a boy, Mason, and a girl, Madilyn, KWCH-TV reported.

"We went in for our six-week sonogram, and they just said there's one heartbeat and here's another," Brittani McIntire told the news station.

Doctors told the couple their unborn son had a hole in his heart and an abnormal brain, and his chances of survival were slim.

After weeks of bad news, the McIntire’s were comforted when their doctor said the sonogram looked like Mason was holding onto Madilyn’s hand, KWCH-TV reported.

"We didn't really see much. [The doctor] said, 'There's his hand, and there's her hand, and it looks like they're holding hands,'" the doctor told KWCH.

Ian said the couple doesn’t know if they will ever meet their son, but they are happy they have the sonogram to show the bond between their unborn children.

“We know we have a piece of them together that will last forever, and it's special to have," Ian said.

Initial attempts by USA TODAY NETWORK to reach the couple for comment have proven unsuccessful.
