'Deadpool' did even better than we thought over the weekend
First the not-great news.
Deadpool's record-breaking three-day weekend numbers dipped slightly in the final tally on Tuesday, from a projected $135 million to a final $132.4 million.
Now to the great news for the the R-rated superhero phenom.
Deadpool's box office made up that lost ground (and then some) during the extended holiday weekend, making $152 million total over the four days. This final number was up from the originally projected four-day of $150 million.
So even more winning for Ryan Reynolds as the foul-mouthed, Marvel anti-hero Deadpool.
'Deadpool' kills with record $135M weekend at box office
ComScore box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian said the final, higher four-day numbers came with a stronger-than-expected push on the President's Day holiday Monday. Dergarabedian called the results "unprecedented," especially with an R rated movie.
Deadpool set a slew of new records over the weekend including:
- The biggest R-rated opening (beating 2003's The Matrix Reloaded, which opened with $91.8 million).
- The biggest February weekend (beating 2015's Fifty Shades of Grey, with $85.2 million).
- The biggest President's Day four-day weekend (beating Fifty Shades of Grey with $93 million).
- The biggest X-men movie (beating 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand with $102.7 million).
- The best Ryan Reynolds opening (beating 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine with $85 million).
Reynolds, who received a box of cheap white wine as a gift from the film's producers, tweeted a thank you message to fans on Valentine's Day.
