Dave Grohl remembers the time Lionel Richie sent him 500 muffins

So, what exactly was Dave Grohl doing at Lionel Richie's tribute celebration Saturday night — because when you think Hello and Nirvana, the connection isn't immediately obvious.

As Grohl explained to the crowd at the Musicares Person of the Year Gala, in an epic speech before serenading Richie with his hit You Are, it all started with some muffins.

"Last summer, we were on tour and I broke my leg. When I got out of surgery I was on my hotel and started to get flowers and cars. One day my wife came and said, 'Wait until you see the muffin basket that just showed up.'" I went in and it was the biggest muffin basket I've ever seen - like 500 muffins. But I didn't know who it was from

A few days later, I got a text from my tour manager - 'Hey, Lionel wants to know if you got the muffin basket.'"

What a class act!

"So tonight, I didn't bring you a muffin basket - but I brought you this," Grohl finished, before launching into the smoothest few minutes of soft rock we've ever heard come out of the man.

A word to the wise - if you're super famous and need some quality baked goods to help you along with your recovery, Lionel Richie is your man.
