Famous faces who died on the road

Say one thing for the way associate justice Antonin Scalia passed on Saturday. He was on the road and having fun, joining a group of friends at a West Texas ranch for some bird hunting and socializing.

Scalia joins a list of notable names in leaving this world while diving headlong into life:

- Actor James Gandolfini was traveling through the ancestral homeland of his forbearers when he died in Rome at age 51 in 2013.

The Republican half of Sonny & Cher, Sonny Bono (seen here in 1997), was elected to Congress from California in 1994.

- Entertainer turned politician Sonny Bono was enjoying the mountains when he hit a tree at Heavenly Ski Resort and passed away at age 62 in 1998.

A. Bartlett Giamatti, former president of Yale and former commission of baseball.

- Former baseball commissioner Bart Giamatti, father of actor Paul, died suddenly while vacationing in Martha's Vineyard in 1989 at age 51.

Sandberg is taking a seat on the board of her late husband's company. Goldberg died in May while on vacation in Mexico.

- Tech CEO Dave Goldberg, husband of Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, died last year at age 47 while at a private vacation home near Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

British actor Oliver Reed died in Malta in 1999.

- Actor Oliver Reed (Oliver!, The Three Musketeers) died at age 61 in 1999 at a bar on the island of Malta, where he was in the middle of shooting the Oscar-winning film Gladiator.
