An 8-year-old boy in El Dorado County, Calif., with cerebral palsy has become an Internet sensation.

Atticus and his father at the skate park in California.

Videos of him having fun at a skate park with his dad have gone viral. The faster, the better, for Atticus Edmunds who thrives on speed, despite having limited mobility.

“I was nervous at first on our first drop in but he came up and he was just so happy and excited,” Jared Edmunds, Atticus’ father told KXTV-TV.

Atticus’ excitement was captured in a video that has been shared by many online. With his parents help, Atticus is overcoming his body's limitations.

“Atti was born at 28 weeks and he weighed 2 pounds, 3 ounces. And so because of that, he has cerebral palsy,” explained Tresa Edmunds, Atticus’ mom.

The neurological disorder affects body movement and muscle coordination, limiting his speaking and walking capabilities. But being at the park is making a difference.

“It's actually a form of therapy,” Tresa Edmunds said. "The nerves don't communicate to his muscles the same way other people do, so when he gets this huge rush of motion, it keeps stuff in for him. He feels that rush.”

Skating also helps Atticus get in on the action.

“It gives him an opportunity to do things that other kids do instead of having him sit on the sidelines and watching,” Jared said.

His daring nature has even caught the attention of other skaters at the park.

“The fact that he's out there, people are seeing him as a skater first, and a kid in a wheelchair second,” Tresa Edmunds said.

Since the video went viral, Atticus' parents say they've been overwhelmed with messages of support. They hope the attention sheds light on kids with cerebral palsy.
