Star Wars: The Force Awakens continues to explore new record box office territory as it will cross the $900 million mark domestically Friday, according to Walt Disney Studio estimates. Its global tally is also expected to surpass $2 billion by Saturday.

It is the only film in history to reach this $900 million domestic milestone, taking just 50 days of release for The Force Awakens to hit it.

The J.J. Abrams-directed film had passed Avatar's record domestic box office of $760.5 million in January to claim the all-time No. 1 spot.

It's official: 'Star Wars' passes 'Avatar' to rule box office

Finn (John Boyega), joins Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew) and Han Solo (Harrison Ford) in 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens.'

In addition, on Saturday (53rd day of global release), The Force Awakens is expected to reach the $2 billion mark worldwide, becoming only the third film to reach the mark (behind James Cameron's Titanic at $2.18 billion and Avatar at $2.78 billion).

“The film’s achievements are truly astounding, and it’s our great honor to relaunch this cinematic galaxy not only for all the devoted decades-long fans but for a new generation who will keep the Star Wars legacy alive for many years to come," Alan Horn, chairman of Walt Disney Studios said in a statement released Friday.
