DARLINGTON, S.C. — Not all of the cars at Darlington Raceway’s throwback weekend have a retro paint scheme, which Dale Earnhardt Jr. tweeted was like showing up to a costume party without a costume.

But at least Martin Truex Jr. has a good excuse.

Truex’s No. 78 Furniture Row Racing car is adding teal to its traditionally black paint scheme in September to honor National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. Sherry Pollex, Truex’s longtime girlfriend, was diagnosed with Stage 3 ovarian cancer one year ago.

Darlington marks the launch of the “Teal Appeal” campaign, which will also see participation from Danica Patrick.

"Knowing the symptoms of ovarian cancer is our best defense in catching the disease earlier because there is no early detection test,” Pollex said. “I’m excited to partner with the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance to spread awareness about the symptoms of ovarian cancer and to bring teal to the track this September through The Teal Appeal.”

Fans can win a race experience where they meet Truex or Patrick by donating $10 to the OCNA via thetealappeal.org. Also, teal gloves will be worn by Truex, Patrick, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kasey Kahne and Ryan Newman this month and then be auctioned off through the Martin Truex Jr. Foundation.

“Sherry is an inspiration and has bravely used her diagnosis of ovarian cancer to educate women about the symptoms of ovarian cancer and to empower them to seek treatment if they think they might have the disease,” OCNA CEO Calaneet Balas said. “We are excited partner with her on The Teal Appeal and spread the word even further and make sure every woman knows her risk.”
