FDA warns over Kim Kardashian drug promo

FDA to Kim K: OMG, have you heard about this? You can't promote your morning-sickness pill that way!

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday warned a Canadian pharmaceutical company that Kardashian's posts on Instagram and Facebook touting prescription Diclegis were "false and misleading." The feds told drugmaker Duchesnay Inc. the ad "presents efficacy claims … but fails to communicate any risk information associated with its use and it omits material facts."

The posts vanished from her accounts Tuesday afternoon. Kardashian is pregnant with her second child with Kanye West.

The FDA said Kardashian's endorsement failed to mention Diclegis' side effects, including drowsiness, dizziness, intestinal woes and trouble sleeping. She also didn't note that the drug — the only FDA-approved prescription for morning sickness — warns not to mix it with alcohol or medications that make you sleepy (sleep aids or some pain relievers, for example).

FWIW, she also didn't mention that Diclegis is not approved for mothers-to-be suffering from prolonged vomiting.

The FDA reminded Quebec-based Duchesnay that it warned the company two years ago about omitting risk information from a letter to doctors. The drugmaker has until Aug. 21 to outline a plan for not crossing the line again.

In a statement, Duchesnay said it "will take quick action in responding to the FDA's letter and immediately and effectively address any issues."

The company told CNBC it paid Kardashian to promote its drug, which she said her doctor prescribed for her "pretty bad" morning sickness.

No immediate word from the Kardashian media machine, the Associated Press said.
