Customers can now buy aspartame-free Diet Pepsi

Aspartame-free Diet Pepsi is now available, according to a statement released Monday from PepsiCo.

"Diet cola drinkers in the U.S. told us they wanted aspartame-free Diet Pepsi and we're delivering," Seth Kaufman, a senior vice president at PepsiCo, said in a statement.

The news comes after PepsiCo announced plans in April to produce aspartame-free soda because of customer health concerns about the sweetener and falling sales. Three aspartame-free products -- Diet Pepsi, Caffeine Free Diet Pepsi and Wild Cherry Diet Pepsi -- will all appear on store shelves this week.

Consumers should check for an "aspartame free" logo before purchasing because some stores may have the old versions stocked until they sell out, according to the AP.

Diet Coke, Diet Dr Pepper and Fanta Zero will still have aspartame, according to the AP. In the non-aspartame sodas, PepsiCo replaced the sweetener with ace-K, or acesulfame-potassium, and sucralose, better known as Splenda.

However, some are concerned about switch.

"Consumers should avoid (ace-K) as well," Michael Jacobson, director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, an advocacy group, told USA TODAY Network in April. "It is poorly tested, but the tests done by the manufacturer in the 1970s suggest that ace-K, too, might pose a cancer risk."
